Wet Belts The Hidden Engine Component That Could Cost You Thousands
With more advanced technology, many of us are earning the benefits like improved efficiency, less carbon dioxide, and quieter & smoother engines. But some improvements come changes under the bonnet and you may not notice that slightly negligence can lead to a bigger problem e.g engine failure or any other serious faults.
One of such new issue is “wet timing belts”, a new introduction off belt found in many modern petrol and diesel car engines.
Unlike traditional “dry” timing belts that sit outside the engine, wet belts fixed inside the engine and constantly wet in oil. They’re made of a material called Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR), which is designed to withstand heat and oil exposure – but only for a limited time.

While these belts were introduced to improve efficiency and reduce emissions, recent industry warnings have raised concern. As the belts degrade, rubber particles can begin to break off and circulate with the engine oil. This can clog oil pick-ups, reduce lubrication to key components, and — in worst cases — lead to total engine failure. It’s often a silent issue, only showing symptoms once serious damage has already been done.
Cars with wet belts, which run in engine oil for reduced noise and friction, are common in modern Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall, some Volkswagen Group models, Toyotas Aygo, Proace. Key brands include Ford Fiesta, Focus, Transit, Peugeot 208, Citroën C3 & Berlingo, Vauxhall Corsa, Astra, and certain VW, Aud, Skoda cars with smaller TSI or TDI engines. Please always check your manual for specific make and model or ask dealer.
